How To Create Article Aliases

Let's pretend that your company wants to send out a marketing email with a special link back to certain articles on your site, you could always send out that email with a really long and ugly URL that looks like this, "http://iheartfood.com/gestalt/go.cfm?objectid=43127341-FFB4-A5BF-EF008GY4D651A5C6" or you could fancy things up a bit and with with a "pretty" URL that looks more like this, "http://iheartfood.com/pancakes".

It's actually quite simple to accomplish, no weird voodoo spells or late night secret society meetings required. All you need is the ID of the article you wish to make shorter...

Step 1) Find the ID of the article you wish to make shorter by going to the page and copying the string of numbers that appear after, "go.cfm?objectid=". Paste them into Note Pad or Text Edit or whatever other clipboard manager you prefer.

Step 2) Now that you have the ID of the article you wish to shorten we can actually do that, go to the toolkit and select Article Aliases from the Web Site Configuration panel.

Step 3) It may be possible that there are already a few aliases already listed, it's possible that these were created when the site was originally setup so you can ignore them. The area that we are most interested in is at the very bottom where it says Add an alias.

Step 4) First write what you would like the new link to be where it says Name:, in this case we are creating one called 'shorturl'. Then where it says Id: paste the article ID that you copied from Step 1 into this field. After you have done that, click the Update button.

Step 5) Now that you have pressed the Update button you can goto your newly created short URL by typing in your site name with whatever short name you called it in Step 4, in this case http://learfieldsports.com/shorturl/ is ours.
